Metallurgical calcium aluminate, also known as pre-melted refined slag, is a material used in the steelmaking process. Its main component is calcium aluminate, which can effectively remove impurities such as sulfur and oxygen in molten steel, reduce the content of harmful elements in steel, and improve the metallurgical quality of steel.
The main functions of metallurgical calcium aluminate:
Desulfurization:
By reacting with sulfides in molten steel, it generates sulfides that are easy to remove, thereby reducing the sulfur content in steel.
Deoxidation:
Reacting with oxygen in molten steel to generate low-melting-point oxides, which are easy to float and remove, thereby improving the purity of molten steel.
Improving the cleanliness of molten steel:
By removing inclusions and improving the fluidity of molten steel, the intrinsic quality of steel is improved.
Shortening smelting time:
Compared with traditional refined slag, it has a low melting point and a fast melting speed, which can shorten the smelting time and improve production efficiency.
Reducing production costs:
Improve the cleanliness of molten steel, reduce scrap steel and alloy consumption, thereby reducing production costs.
Classification and application of metallurgical calcium aluminate:
Sintered calcium aluminate:
It is made of high-quality bauxite and limestone and calcined in a rotary kiln. It has the characteristics of uniform composition, low melting point and fast melting speed.
Fused calcium aluminate:
It is produced by electric melting method, with higher purity and better performance. It is mainly used for desulfurization and deoxidation during LF furnace, open hearth furnace and converter refining.
Amorphous calcium aluminate:
It is mainly used as an accelerator for shotcrete and repair mortar in tunnels, underground engineering and other fields.
Advantages of metallurgical calcium aluminate:
Uniform composition:
The composition of sintered and fused calcium aluminate is relatively uniform, which avoids component segregation and makes the smelting process more stable.
Environmental protection:
It does not contain fluorine, does not corrode the furnace lining, does not absorb water, is easy to store and transport, and is beneficial to environmental protection.
Improve the quality of steel:
Reduce the content of harmful elements such as sulfur and oxygen in steel, and improve the strength, toughness and weldability of steel.
Reduce production costs:
Reduce overall production costs by improving production efficiency and reducing material consumption.
In summary, metallurgical calcium aluminate plays an important role in the steelmaking process, and it contributes to the development of the steel industry by improving molten steel quality, increasing production efficiency and reducing costs.
Properties:
Depending on the intended application, it is produced in different sizes. As a flux for casting tundishes, we offer granules of 0.5 - 5.0 mm. In the field of secondary metallurgy, granules of 5 - 15 mm are used.
It is a microporous granule. If the melt or slag is agitated, for example by washing, the liquid slag or melt penetrates into the pores and dissolves rapidly.
By combining granulation and subsequent sintering, calcium aluminates with very different compositions can be produced - even to customer-specific requirements.
10 % < CaO < 53 %, 25 % < Al2O3 < 60 %, 1 % < MgO < 20 %.
Application:
The main field of application is secondary metallurgy. Specifically, calcium aluminates are used for desulfurization in ladle furnaces. As a result, a highly reactive slag is formed very quickly. Subsequently, the slag is saturated with lime, for example by adding slag lime, which leads to optimal desulfurization.
Another area of application for pre-reacted calcium aluminate is the production of hydrogen-sensitive steel qualities, such as thick plate grades. In continuous casting plants, it is used as a slag former ("sandwich") in the tundish. As liquid slag, it protects the melt from contact with the atmosphere, reduces possible reactions between the melt and acidic cover materials and inhibits the growth of oxide inclusions.
Fused Calcium Aluminate is made of high quality lime and bauxite as the main raw materials, which is melted in an electric furnace according to a certain proportion, cooled, crushed and sieved into products with different particle sizes.
